Robert D. Volkmar, 87, a resident of Edinboro Manor and formerly of Erie and Leesburg, FL, died Thursday morning August 22, 2013 at his residence following a brief illness. He was born in Erie on November 8, 1925 a son of the late Clement G. and Anna Kunder Volkmar.
Robert was a 1943 graduate of Academy High School and went on to earn a Bachelor of Science Degree in Industrial Engineering and a Masters of Business Administration from Gannon College. He proudly served in the Merchant Marines during World War II and earned an honorable discharge from the United States Coast Guard. Robert worked with Kaiser Aluminum for 30 years as a maintenance superintendent and seven years as plant manager before retiring in 1981. He was a longtime competitive pistol shooter, competing into his eighties. He enjoyed trout fishing and upon retirement became a gentleman's farmer in which he farmed apples and blueberries on his Wattsburg farm.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife of 67 years, Mary Alice Schilling Volkmar; one sister, Rosemary Spinks and one brother C. Richard Volkmar.
Survivors include three daughters, Susan Dodd of Waterford, Marilyn Weaver and her husband Charles of Perry, OH, and Barbara Volkmar of Waterford; one son, Robert Volkmar of Roulette, PA; eight grandchildren; six great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Friends may call at the Russell C. Schmidt & Son Funeral Home Inc., 5000 Wattsburg Rd., on Sunday from 2 to 5 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. and are invited to services there on Monday morning at 10:00 a.m.. Burial will follow in Laurel Hill Cemetery.
