Obituary for Marlin K. Coon

Marlin K. Coon
Marlin K. Coon, 78, of Summit Township, passed away peacefully on Tuesday May 2, 2017 at residence with his family by his side. He was born in Kearsarge, PA on February 22, 1939 a son of the late William S. and Glenna Mae Schellhamer Coon.

Marlin graduated from Academy High School in 1957 and was owner of Coon Refrigeration and Air Conditioning. He also worked in steel fabrication for a number of years. In 1996 Marlin started a new career as a Summit Township Supervisor. He had been involved in his Summit community in various capacities for most of his life, but still wanted to do more. With Marlin's guidance, Township debt was eliminated and Summit began a strict saving and investment plan to provide for future needs and capital purchases. Concerned about safety, Marlin fought and succeeded in securing state funding for major improvements along Peach Street and I-90. His most lasting legacy is that, because of Marlin's work, Presque Isle Downs and Casino opened in Summit Township, dramatically improving his beloved community and all of Erie County for future generations. After serving 18 years as Township Supervisor, Marlin retired in 2013, but remained a close friend and mentor to all of his fellow Township employees.

He attended Bethel Baptist Church for most of his life and was a life member of the Erie Maennerchor and St. Francis Ushers Clubs. He enjoyed welding, designing, and building. He was an avid hunter.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his granddaughter, Karra Poole; his step- grandson, Elijah Comer; one sister, Bernadette Schenck and her husband, Paul; and one brother, Silas Coon and his wife, Elsie.

Survivors include his wife, Evelyn Skibinksi Coon; two daughters, Sherie Lossie and her husband, Bob, of Lake City and Vicki Poole and her husband, Msgt. Michael, of Frederica, Delaware; two sons, Marlin Coon and Michael Coon and his wife, Deena, all of Erie; three stepdaughters, Debra Paulson of Alabama, Patricia Gyratz and her husband, Frank, of Harborcreek, and Catherine Reynolds and her husband, Chip, of Erie; three stepsons, Kevin Helfast and his wife, Jessica, James Wozniak and his wife, Peggy, of Erie, and Col. William Wozniak and his wife, Wendy, of Washington, D.C.; one sister, Bernice Williams of Erie; one brother, Roger Coon and his wife, Geri, of Florida; eight grandchildren; eight stepgrandchildren; six step great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Friends are invited to a memorial service at the Russell C. Schmidt & Son Funeral Home Inc., 5000 Wattsburg Rd., on Friday at 12:00 noon. Burial will be private and at the convenience of the family.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions can be made to Hospice of Metropolitan Erie, 202 E. 10th St., Erie, 16503.

The family would like to extend their thanks and appreciation to Hospice of Metropolitan Erie for the loving care given to Marlin.
