Obituary for Bertha E. Praetzel (Mintzer)
Bertha E. Mintzer Praetzel, age 102, of Erie, passed away Sunday, May 21, 2023, at Sarah A. Reed Senior Living. She was born in Erie on July 20, 1920, a daughter of the late Harry and Mary Fried Mintzer.
Bertha was the owner of the Valley Hi Motel, which she operated for 25 years after the untimely death of her husband at the age of 48. She was a founding member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church. Bertha’s life was centered around her family and her religion, saying the rosary every day. She enjoyed knitting and crocheting.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Robert J. Praetzel, her two sisters, Rita Belknap, and Marie Erdely; and her great-granddaughter, Ashley.
Survivors include her two sons, James M. Praetzel (Camille), and Robert C. Praetzel (Paula), both of Erie; her nine grandchildren, Sara Dorich (Andrew), Mark Praetzel (Jamie), John Praetzel (Stacy), Robert Sean Praetzel (Kathy), Brian Praetzel (Katie), Aaron Praetzel (Lisa), Daron Praetzel (Karen), Faith Federici (Rick), and Christa Collins (Gary); her 26 great- grandchildren; and her 6 great-great-grandchildren.
Friends may call at the Russell C. Schmidt & Son Funeral Home, Inc. 5000 Wattsburg Rd. Erie, PA on Wednesday from 5 to 8 p.m. and are invited to prayer service there on Thursday at 9:30 a.m. followed by a Funeral Mass at Our Lady of Mount Carmel at 10 a.m. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery.
