Obituary for Janice Kosin (Sokol)

Janice (Sokol) Kosin, 73, of Greene Township, passed away Monday April 3rd after a courageous battle with cancer. She was born in Erie, Pennsylvania on May 12, 1949, daughter of the late Ernest and Gertrude (Kowalski) Sokol.

She graduated from St. Benedict’s Academy in 1967 and later in 1971 from Mercyhurst College with a degree in education.

Janice was a devoted wife to her husband Lawrence Kosin for over 47 years. Together they built a home where she enjoyed spending the summers in her garden and watching wildlife from her deck, or the winters in front of the fireplace curled up with a good book.

She was a very proud mother to three children Debra (Shaun) Wilcox of Harborcreek, Michael Kosin of Leesburg, Virginia and Julie (Steven) O’Donnell who lived in the house next door.

Her greatest joy in life was spending time with family and watching her 6 grandchildren as they grow. She was always celebrating the accomplishments of AnneMarie, Tyler, and Ethan Kosin along with Emma, Ava, and Aiden O’Donnell.

Janice is also survived by her brother Daniel (Marilyn) Sokol of Venice, Florida. They shared a special bond and spoke on the phone daily. In addition, many cousins, nieces, and nephews held an important place in Janice’s heart.

Most people would remember Janice because of her involvement in the community. She was a member of the St. Boniface Roman Catholic church, retired teacher from Prince of Peace Pre-School, and twice a year would greet community members at the election polls for Greene Township District I. If you ever had to wait in line to vote, it was likely because Janice wanted to chat and see how you and your family were doing. She loved being around people. And people loved being around her.

Janice’s husband and children remember her most fondly for being at every dance recital, sporting event, and family function. Her favorite things were hugs and Christmas trees. She loved unconditionally and lived a faith filled life. Janice would never miss a chance to be out experiencing life with family and friends; documenting all moments through her many photos.

The family wishes to thank all the staffs of the Hillman Cancer Center, UPMC Hamot, and the Erie Cancer Wellness Center for their excellent and compassionate care throughout this journey.
