Obituary for Janet A. Allen (Smith)

Janet A. Allen, 75, died peacefully and surrounded by family following a brief illness on Thursday, September 29, 2022. She was born in Corry on April 27, 1947, the first child of the late George and Mary Ellen (Follett) Smith.

Janet graduated from Wattsburg Area High School in 1965 and Villa Maria College in 1970 – following her dream of becoming an elementary school teacher. She married the love of her life, Thomas John Allen, at Lowville Methodist Church on June 11, 1966. Took a year off of college to have her daughter Tina, and returned to college, student taught, and graduated in 1970. Janet proudly taught second grade at Union City Public Schools for 38 years – having a student teacher every semester she was able, until her retirement in 2007.

Janet had a great sense of humor, she loved to laugh, and she loved to teach. After her first day in first grade, she came home wanting to be a teacher, and never stopped wanting to teach. After retirement, she continued teaching as a substitute teacher for a number of years. Janet often surprised her class by dressing according to the holiday – as a witch at Halloween, a Pilgrim for Thanksgiving, and an elf for Christmas. It is rumored, she always wanted to dress as the Easter Bunny, but never did. Janet remembered her student’s birthdays by gifting each with a book on their birthday. In retirement, she gifted many of us with her cards full of confetti.

Janet especially enjoyed feeding her birds – and all the wild animals that came to her door and having coffee with her teacher friends.

Janet will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her – her family, friends, and former students.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister Sandra Perkins.

She is survived by her husband of 56 years, Thomas Allen; her daughter Tina (Pippen, Ellie, and Hopper) Allen; her brothers Dennis (Kim), Charles (Darlene), and her sisters Lorri (Ralph) Turner, Julie Smith (Colette Satler), and Leslie (Scott) Hulings, brother-in-law Emmett Perkins, many nieces and nephews and many, many pets.

The family would like to especially thank Laura from VNA Hospice.
