Obituary for Edward J. Allgeier

Edward Joseph Allgeier, 88, of Greene Township passed away peacefully on Sunday, September 4, 2022, in Erie, PA, surrounded by his family. Ed will be remembered as a man devoted to his Catholic faith, his family, and his community. He enjoyed gardening, caring for his property, dancing with his beloved wife, golfing with his brothers-in-law, and spending time with his large extended family.

Ed was born June 9, 1934, son of the late Joseph P. and Ella M. (Lorei) Allgeier. Faith and service led him to the love of his life, Carol Ann Weis, with whom he shared nearly 59 years of loving marriage, raising five children, all while being a gentle witness to his faith. His unwavering devotion and warm affection to his wife, children, and grandchildren inspired family and friends.

As a lifelong member of St. Boniface Catholic Church, Ed supported the parish mission through his service on parish council, finance council, parish festivals, Knights of Columbus (4th Degree Knight) and as a Eucharistic minister to the homebound. Together with his wife, he served the residents at the Erie County Geriatric Center (Pleasant Ridge) for 50 years, including monthly bingos, yearly shopping trips and summer picnics. He consistently supported the Gertrude Barber Center and Special Olympics of PA. In addition, he was proud to receive the honor of Knight of St. Patrick.

Ed was a graduate of Cathedral Prep and Gannon College. He spent nearly his entire professional career with Skinner Engine Company on West 12th Street, working his way up the finance operations. When a challenging business climate threatened the viability of the company in 1986, Ed and a team of individual investors purchased the company, retaining operations and employment in Erie for many years. He retired in 1999 as Chief Financial Officer and was beloved by employees for his quiet demeanor, inspired wisdom, and steady hand.

Ed is survived by his wife, Carol, his children Charles (Beth) Allgeier, Mary Ellen (Matthew) Pisano, Joseph (Tricia Costa) Allgeier, Gerard Allgeier and Alan (Dara) Allgeier, 11 grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, many loving in-laws and numerous nieces and nephews. Ed was preceded in death by his parents, his sister and his brother-in-law (Mary and Donald Dombek).
