Obituary for William J. "Bill" Shields II

William J. Shields, II., 86, of Erie and formerly of Portland, NY, passed away on Friday September 2, 2022 at Ball Pavilion at Brevillier Village. He was born in Erie, PA on April 22, 1936 a son of the late William J. Shields, Sr. and Hazel Craft Shields.

Bill graduated from Academy High School and worked for the Chautauqua and Erie Telephone Corporation. Most recently he worked as an electrical lineman supervisor for Henkels & McCoy. He was a member of the Tri-Church Parish and the Portland Volunteer Fire Department. He was an avid reader and loved the outdoors, especially hunting, bird watching, and fishing. He had a deep love for his entire family and would do anything for them.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his brother, Carl C. Shields, and his sister, Dorothy Koos.

Survivors include his five daughters, Beckie Rick (Larry) of Erie, Bunnie Perkins (David) of Westfield, NY, Brenda Tafelski (Ken) of Erie, Beth O'Baker (Darryl) of Harborcreek, and Belinda Shields of Erie; one son, William J. Shields, III (Linda) of Fredonia, NY; 13 grandchildren; 21 great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Friends may call at the Russell C. Schmidt & Son Funeral Home Inc., 5000 Wattsburg Rd., on Wednesday from 1 p.m. until the time of services there at 4 p.m. Burial will take place in Wintergreen Gorge Cemetery (section 11) on Thursday at 10 a.m.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions can be made to the Tri-Church Parish, 41 E. Main St., Brocton, NY 14716.
