Obituary for Sylvia A. Schmitt (Brzozowski)

Sylvia A. Brzozowski Schmitt, 81, of Erie, passed away peacefully on Saturday July 30, 2022 surrounded by family at UPMC Hamot. She was born in Erie on May 7, 1941 a daughter of the late John and Stella Malinski Brzozowski.

Sylvia graduated from St. Stanislaus and went on to graduate from St. Benedict Academy. She originally worked as a cord board girl with General Telephone Company and most recently worked as an auto endorser for Erie Insurance for over 20 years until her retirement in 2003. She was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, the Polish Falcons Nest 610, and the Erie Insurance Golden Girls. Sylvia loved cooking, especially Polish foods, and enjoyed gardening, fishing, and bowling. She loved her family and hosted many lively holiday celebrations and family get-togethers. She was a very talented seamstress who made many of her own stylish clothes and clothes for her children, and became affectionately known as the "pajama maker" to her grandchildren.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her sister, Annmarie "Annie" Buki; and her brother, Raymond J. Brzozowski, Sr.

Survivors include her husband, Joseph J. Schmitt, Jr.; three daughters, Natalie Fulton (Dan) of Charlotte, NC, Pam Cass (Tom) of Erie, and Sallie Haibach (Rich) of Erie; one son, Joe Schmitt (Nicole) of Erie; four grandchildren, Rachel and Ella Cass, and Lauren and Charlie Haibach; one sister, Patricia Mayer, of Erie; sister-in-law Susan Brzozowski and brother-in-law Joseph Buki; and many nieces and nephews.

Friends may call at the Russell C. Schmidt & Son Funeral Home Inc., on Thursday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. and are invited to a prayer service there on Friday at 9:15 a.m. followed by a Funeral Mass at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church at 10 a.m. Burial will follow in Wintergreen Gorge Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions can be made, in Sylvia's name, to the Erie Humane Society, 2407 Zimmerly Rd, Erie, PA 16506 on Erie Gives Day on August 9th.

The family would like to extend sincere thanks to the staff at the ICU at UPMC Hamot, especially Theresa Connelly, RN, for their loving care and compassion shown to Sylvia and her family.
