Obituary for Suzanne "Sue" Kania (Lorei)

Suzanne “Sue” Lorei Kania, 85, passed away on Thursday, July 14, 2022 at Nightingale Nursing Home.

She was born in Erie on October 31, 1936, a daughter of the late Albert and Eleanor Trott Lorei.


Sue graduated from St. Benedict Academy in 1955. She married the late Norbert J. Kania on August 3, 1957. He preceded her in death on August 11, 2002.

Alongside with her husband, she was the owner of Hammett Motors for 37 years. She also owned her own catering business.

Sue was a member of the Kuhl Hose Ladies Auxiliary and the St Boniface Usher’s Club Ladies Auxiliary, where she chaired many events. She was also a member of St. Boniface Roman Catholic Church, where she served on the sympathy committee, was part of the liturgy committee, chaired many festivals, and was an officer in the Parent Teachers Society.

Sue was always available to help anyone in need. She never turned down an opportunity and never complained. She was very family oriented and loved being with her family. She made sure to attend every family event. Her grandchildren were the highlight of her life.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her son, Andrew Kania; her sisters, Florence Krumpe, Marie Mifsud, Loretta Meyers, Sr. Bernadette Lorei, OSB, and Sr. Anita Lorei, SSJ; and three brothers, Charles, Alfred, and Msgr Louis Lorei.

She is survived by her three daughters, Chris Ester (George), Cheryl Ferrie (Michael),both of Erie and Kim Petrone (Joe), of Monroe NC; her daughter-in-law, Denise Kania of Summitt Twp ; 11 grandchildren, Melissa, Nikki, Carly, Bryan, Eric, Megan, Matt, Steve, Zach, Dani, and Casi; five great-grandchildren, Jake, Ethan, Lucas, Kyla, and Izabella; two brothers, John Lorei of Iowa and Joseph Lorei of Erie; her sister, Cecilia Schneyer of Long Island, NY; her sister-in-law, Carol Gradler (Gary) of Summit Twp; brother-in-law, Vic Kania (Carol) of New Mexico; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Friends may call at the Russell C. Schmidt and Son Funeral Home, Inc., 5000 Wattsburg Rd., Erie, Pa 16504 on Monday from 2-7 PM. Visitation will continue on Tuesday at St. Boniface Roman Catholic Church from 9:30 AM until the time of a Funeral Mass at 10 AM. A private burial will be in Mount of Olives Cemetery at a future date.
