Obituary for Thomas A. Engesser

Thomas A. Engesser, 65, passed away on Tuesday, July 12, 2022, at his residence surrounded by family and friends after a battle with colon cancer. He was born in Erie on February 4, 1957, a son of the late George and Betty Kinnear Engesser Sr. He graduated from Seneca High School and married his high school sweetheart, Evelyn Mientkiewicz, on September 11, 1976.

He began his career in excavating at Afton trucking and eventually started his own business, Engesser Excavating, in 1993. Tom, with support from his wife, ran Engesser Excavating until the day he passed. Tom was often quoted as saying he will retire when he's dead and he stayed true to his word. He used his excavating skills to volunteer in the community by digging basements for Habitat for Humanity, digging fire hydrants for several volunteer fire departments in Erie County, and assisting with maintenance of local athletic fields.

In addition to enjoying his work, he loved hunting, spending time with family and friends, attending Pioneer Steam Engine shows, and antique tractors.

Besides his parents, he is preceded in death by a sister, Shirley Stiner and a nephew, Robert George Engesser.

He is survived by his wife, Evelyn Engesser; his son, Anthony Engesser (Kayla) and his grandchildren Derik, Brodon and Makendra of Erie; his daughter, Lynnette Weber and his grandchildren Riley and Benjamin of Grove City; his brother, George Engesser Jr. (Diana) of Erie; three sisters, Nancy Erbin (Donald), Mary Pizzuto, and Betsy Moffett (Brian) all of Erie; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Friends may call at the Russell C. Schmidt and Son Funeral Home Inc. 5000 Wattsburg Rd., Erie, Pa 16504 on Friday from 10-11 AM with a memorial service to follow at 11 AM. Burial will be private and at the convenience of the family.
