Obituary for Valerie Mae Applequist

Valerie Mae Kahler Applequist, age 84, of Wattsburg, passed away Friday, March 11, 2022, at UPMC Hamot Hospital. She was born in Greenville, Pa on January 11, 1938, a daughter of the late Harry E. and Virginia Rose Bartells Kahler.

Valerie graduated from Conneaut Valley Joint High School in 1956 and went on to work for the Erie County Infirmary. She took great pride in gardening, canning, and preserving food. As an artist she was a member of the Artist Association of Erie, enjoyed doing various types of drawing and painting. She enjoyed crocheting, sewing, reading, and was very savvy with computers. Valerie earned many ribbons and awards entering her gardening and artwork at the Erie County Fair. Above all, Valerie loved spending time with her family. She would host family picnics and would play card games including hand and foot and acey-deucey with anyone that came to visit.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 49 years, Richard L. Applequist; her grandson, Bobby Aldridge; and her sister Blanche Sullivan.

Survivors include her three daughters, Michele Stillwell (Joseph) of Erie, Lee Ann Griffin (Andrew) of Ripley, NY, and Tricia Knight (Patrick) of Erie; two sons, Richard “Rick” Applequist II (Michelle) of McKean and Theodore “Ted” Applequist of Erie; thirteen grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; two brothers, Marvin Kahler (Robin), of Salisbury, MD and Glenn Kahler (Barbara), of Globe, AZ; and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services are private and at the convenience of the family. Funeral arrangements were made by the Russell C. Schmidt & Son Funeral Home, Inc. 5000 Wattsburg Rd. Erie, PA. Burial will be in Lowville Cemetery.
