Obituary for Robert J. Altsman Jr.

Robert J. Altsman, Jr., 85, of Erie, passed away on Wednesday November 10, 2021 at St. Vincent Health Center. He was born in Erie on October 6, 1936 a son of the late Robert J. Altsman, Sr. and Helena G. Ferree Altsman.

Robert graduated from Academy High School in 1954 and attended Behrend Center for two years before graduating from Penn State University in 1958. He was a life member of the University's alumni association and served in the PSAA Lake Erie Chapter board of directors as President, Vice President, Treasurer, and member for over 40 years. Following graduation from Penn State, he was commissioned as a Navy Reserve Officer, class 42 Navy Officer Candidate in Newport, RI. He retired as a Commander after nearly 25 years of service.

Robert enjoyed working in finance at the Erie GE plant. He also enjoyed playing and coaching softball, being a Boy's Baseball coach, and volunteering as an income tax preparer. He was an avid Penn State fan. He was a life member of the Erie Maennerchor Club, the Association of the United States Navy, and Delta Sigma Pi Business Fraternity. He was also a member of the American Legion Carl Neff Post #571 in Wesleyville for over 45 years.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife of nearly 30 years, Judith Ann Thunberg Altsman; his daughter, Roberta J. Altsman; and two brothers, Thomas C. and William Altsman.

Survivors include his son, Brian J. Altsman, Sr. and his wife, Cecelia; two grandchildren, Cynthia Judith Altsman and Brian J. Altsman, Jr.; one brother, Roger W. Altsman; two sisters, Marietta Vogel and Cheryl Altsman; and many nieces and nephews.

Friends may call at the RUSSELL C. SCHMIDT & SON FUNERAL HOME INC., 5000 Wattsburg Rd., on Monday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. and are invited to services there on Tuesday at 10 a.m. Burial with full military honors will follow in Laurel Hill Cemetery.
