Obituary for Margarete A. "Gretel" Daeschner (Herold)

Margarete "Gretel" (Herold) Daeschner, 97, of Erie, passed away on Sunday July 11, 2021 at Lecom Senior Living Center. She was born on September 28, 1923 in Lahr, Germany and was the daughter of Professor Peter and Anna Herold.

Gretel and her husband married on June 22, 1943 in Karlsruhe, Germany and moved to Erie in 1959 where Gretel and her husband worked their own Interior Decorating Business for 37 years. Gretel sewed custom-made draperies and bedspreads.

Gretel loved to bicycle on the beach, take long walks in the woods, and enjoyed playing all sorts of card games. She was very active at the Glenwood YMCA where she swam and exercised for 50 years. Gretel and her husband, Emil, enjoyed their retirement spending time with their family.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her loving husband of 76 years, Emil; six brothers, Kurt, Werner, Walter, Wolfgang, Guenther, and Hans; and one sister, Gertrude, all in Germany.

Gretel is survived by two sons, Rolf E. Daeschner and his wife, Janice, of Erie and their three children, Kevin and his wife, Christine, Brian and his wife, Christine, and Diane all of Pittsburgh; and Bernd P. Daeschner and his wife, Michelle, and their two children, Brooke and Logan, all of Fairview. In addition to her five grandchildren, Gretel is survived by six great grandchildren, Brendan, Luke, Emma, Joey, Alyssa, and Sarah; one niece, Marion (Herold) Voecking, of Germany; and one nephew, Thomas Herold, of Germany.

Friends may call at the Russell C. Schmidt & Son Funeral Home Inc., 5000 Wattsburg Rd., on Sunday from 2 p.m. until the time of servivces there at 4 p.m.. Burial will be private and at the convenience of the family.
