Obituary for Joseph R. Winkler

Joseph R. Winkler, 80, of Greene Twp., passed away peacefully at his residence on Sunday February 21, 2021 surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Pittsburgh on October 16, 1940 a son of the late Oswald and Barbara Hufnagel Winkler.

Joe graduated from North Catholic High School and worked at Zurn Industries until his retirement in 1994. He was a member of St. Boniface Catholic Church and a lifetime member of the St. Boniface Ushers Club. He enjoyed Sauerkraut Sunday, gardening, woodworking, making wine, and canning. He especially loved spending time with his family. ​Joe was not selfish when it came to helping the community with welding projects. From school playground equipment, basketball hoops, baseball backstops to race cars and farm equipment, Joe would be there to provide his welding talent.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his stepmother, Lucille Fisher Winkler; one brother, James Winkler; and two step-sisters, Linda Watkins and Judy Kress.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Wolf Winkler; one son, Joseph Winkler and his wife, Jeanne, of Waterford; three daughters, Kathy Deutsch and her husband, Joe, of Wattsburg, Lisa Brzozowski and her husband, Tom, of Erie, and Barbara Johnson and her husband, Dr. Kurt, of Erie; nine grandchildren, Lauren (fiance, Zach Gillman), Kaitlyn, and Erica Winkler, Michael Deutsch, Megan, and Leanne Brzozowski, and Amanda, Claire, and Kurt Johnson, Jr.; a sister in law, Sharon Winkler; and many nieces and nephews. ​

Friends may call at the Russell C. Schmidt & Son Funeral Home Inc., 5000 Wattsburg Rd., on Friday from 3 to 7 p.m. and are invited to a Funeral Mass at St. Boniface Catholic Church on Saturday at 11 a.m. Burial will follow in Mount of Olives Cemetery. All Erie County Covid-19 guidelines will be enforced.
