Obituary for Dennis M. Melquist

Dennis M. Melquist, 77, of Erie, passed away on Saturday, December 26, 2020, after a courageous battle with cancer. He was born in Erie, on July 10, 1943, a son of the late Gustav and Lavina Jensen Melquist.

Dennis graduated from Fort LeBoeuf High School in 1961 and went on to serve in the United States Air Force, stationed in the Philippines and Vietnam. He worked part-time for the United States Postal Service while starting his 35 year long career at General Electric as a machinist, inspector, and assembler, retiring in 2000. Dennis was a former member of the Commodore Perry Yacht Club for 27 years where he was the lift master and was awarded the Max Weber Award in 1988. He loved spending time with his grandchildren, family, and friends. Dennis enjoyed fishing, woodworking, guns, and taking care of his yard. He was an avid reader and loved traveling with his family.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his son, Matthew Melquist; his brother, Ronald Melquist; and his nephew, Jeremy Simons.

Survivors include his wife of 49 ½ years, Paulie Simons Melquist; his two sons, Michael Melquist, of Erie and Dennis W. Melquist and his wife Miranda, of Union City; his sister, Donna Melquist, of Waterford; his daughter-in-law, Bethany Melquist, of Erie; his five grandchildren, Alexander, Meeko, Micah, Ezra Melquist, and Miranda McAllister; his two great-grandsons, Ryker and Max Melquist; and many nieces and nephews.

Dennis’s family would like to thank the hospice caregivers, especially, Kristen, Mary, Michele, Janice, and Samantha, for all the love and care they gave him.

Friends may call at the Russell C. Schmidt & Son Funeral Home, Inc. 5000 Wattsburg Rd. on Wednesday from 3 to 6 p.m. All current CDC guidelines will be adhered to.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Salvation Army, Heartland Hospice Care, and/or to the Perry Hi-Way Hose Company.
