Ruth V. Beck Bean passed away peacefully on Friday, June 8, 2018 at Sarah Reed Senior Living Center. She was born in Erie on May 25, 1930, the daughter of the late Louella Beck Pratt and adopted daughter of grandparents, Dr. Frank Beck and Mabel Beck.

Ruth graduated from East High School in 1948 and earned a B.S. degree in Home Economics from Mercyhurst College in 1952. She taught school in Union City, Pa before becoming a mother and homemaker. Later she became co-owner of Breslers’ Ice Cream and Lighting Creations in the Millcreek Mall. She was a member of the Zonta Club of Erie and volunteered at St. Vincent’s Health Center for over 45 years, delivering flowers to patients. She also volunteered for Hospice of Metropolitan Erie and St. Paul’s Neighborhood Free Clinic. Her interests included antiques, traveling, canning, reading, and garage sales, as well as a love for gardening and hosting family dinners.

Ruth was preceded in death by her brother, David Beck; her eldest son, Jeffery Bean; and a daughter-in-law, Valerie Bean.

She is survived by five sons: Benjamin, Mark (and his wife Carol Bean) and Gregory, all of Erie; a son, David, of Corry, Pa; John, of Delaware; and a daughter Laura, of Berkeley, CA. Seven grandchildren include Janelle Bean Gwin, Todd Bean, Josie Noble, Jeffrey Noble, Nicole Bean Tupek, Amanda Bean Rourke, and Russell Bean; Eight great-grandchildren: Gabriel and Christian Gwin, Caleb Bean, Alivia Bean, Aaron and Adalynn Tupek, and Eliza and River Rourke. Other loved ones include sister in law Betty Beck-Blaitner, Richard Teubert of Cochranton, Pa, and her former husband, Harvey Bean. Two faithful companions in her final years were her caregiver Sue Martin and her beloved cat “Kitty-Kitty.”

Friends may call at the Russell C. Schmidt & Son Funeral Home, Inc. 5000 Wattsburg Rd. on Monday from 5 to 8 p.m. A funeral mass will be held at Blessed Sacrament Church on Tuesday at 10:00 a.m. Burial will follow at Erie Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of one’s choice.
