Obituary for Ruth G. Meyer (Carter)

Ruth G. Meyer (Carter)
Ruth Carter Meyer, age 95, of Erie, passed away on Friday, May 4, 2018 at Elmwood Gardens. Ruthie – as she was called from birth – was born on December 23, 1922 in Erie, daughter of the late Bennard and Marie (Brinkley) Carter.
She graduated from East High School in 1940. She was an active member of Emmanuel Presbyterian Church, serving as Clerk of Sessions, an Elder, Deacon, and President of the Women’s Association. She also served on the Volunteers Auxiliary Committee of the Presbyterian Lodge, as well as being a volunteer for the Friends of the Library.
She spent most of her adult life working in the legal community, starting as the receptionist at the Quinn law firm and retiring as Executive Director of the Erie County Bar Association. The legal profession was very special to her and she counted “her” attorneys as special friends. She was given the Liberty Bell Award by the Bar Association for her efforts on behalf of Lawyers Referral Service, something close to her heart for personal reasons.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Elmer G. Meyer; a sister Norene Lingle; and a brother Bennard Carter.
She is survived by her brother, James F. Carter; her husband’s son, Gary L. Meyer (Kathleeen); close friends, Rose McLaren and Carol Ross; a niece Nancy Jackson (Thomas) of Titusville, Florida; several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren from her husband’s family.
A Celebration of Life service will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, June 6th, at Emmanuel Presbyterian Church, 3520 Perry St., officiated by the Pastor, Rev. Rick Cepris.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Emmanuel Presbyterian Church, 3520 Perry St., Erie, 16504 or to Emmaus Ministries, 218 East 11th St. Erie, 16503.
Funeral arrangements were made by the Russell C. Schmidt & Son Funeral Home, Inc., 5000 Wattsburg Rd. Erie, 16504.
