Joan Gallina Zieg, 86, of Erie, passed away on Monday, March 27, 2017 at LECOM Senior Living Center. She was born in Cleveland, OH on August 10, 1930, the daughter of the late Daniel P. and Mary J. Parris Gallina.
Joan graduated from Mercyhurst High School in 1947. She earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Education from Edinboro University and her Master’s Degree in English from Gannon University. Joan worked as a teacher in the Erie School District and as a caseworker for the Erie County Courthouse. She was a past member of St. Peter Cathedral. Joan published five romance novels with her sister, Linda Burak under the pseudonym of Alicia Meadows. Joan was an avid reader, who enjoyed sunsets over Lake Erie, watercolor painting, and learning about local history.
In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her sister, Linda Burak.
Survivors include her daughter, Tracy Grotzinger, of Colorado, and her two grandsons, Andrew and Neil Grotzinger; her sister, Barbara Staiger and her husband David, of Newtown, PA; and her two brothers, Ronald Gallina and Damian Gallina and his wife Joyce, both of Erie.
Friends are invited to a memorial service on Thursday at 10:30 a.m. at the Russell C. Schmidt & Son Funeral Home, Inc. 5000 Wattsburg Rd. Erie, PA, 16504. Burial will take place at Laurel Hill Cemetery at the convenience of the family.
