Obituary for Kathleen "Kitty" Cancilla-Hilton (Triana)

Kathleen "Kitty" Triana Cancilla-Hilton, 77, of Erie, passed away at her residence on Saturday, December 15, 2018 surrounded by her loved ones. She was born in Buffalo, on July 4, 1941, a daughter of the late Sam and Louise (Constantino) Triana.

Kitty graduated from Sherman High School in Sherman, NY in 1959. At an early age, she was drawn to helping others and worked in numerous social service positions to help her community. Her true calling came in 1982, when she became the Executive Director of Community Shelter Services, Inc.

As the director, Kitty helped grow and develop a small homeless shelter on the East side of Erie into the largest multiple housing facilities for homeless and low income individuals and families in Erie County. Her nurturing soul and continued selfless acts of kindness has touched the hearts of thousands. Kitty’s belief was that every person should be treated with dignity and respect, no matter their circumstance.

In 2012 Kitty founded "Our Neighbor's Place" Overflow Shelter, which brought the religious community of Erie County together advocating for the ever increasing population of disadvantaged, homeless, and needy individuals who are in need a warm meal and a place to lay their head. She retired at the end of 2015 after more than 33 years with the agency. She was an active member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church many years, where she had at one time served as a youth minister and sang in the choir.

Survivors include her devoted and loving husband, Timothy Hilton; a daughter, Brenda Balduf and her husband, Jeff, of Erie; two sons, Bruce Cancilla and Brian Cancilla and his wife, Ann, all of Erie; one stepson, Jason Hilton of Erie; two sisters, Georgian Turri and her husband, Rich, and MaryLou Triana, all of North East; one brother, Sam "Sonny" Triana and his wife, Anita, of North East; six grandchildren, Cameron, Bryn, Brayden, Alyssa, Brandon, and Logan; along with many nieces and nephews.

Friends may call at the Russell C. Schmidt & Son Funeral Home Inc., 5000 Wattsburg Rd., on Tuesday from 2 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. and are invited to services at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, 643 W. 17th St., on Wednesday at 10 a.m. Burial will follow at the Laurel Hill Cemetery.

The family would like to extend a sincere thank you to the entire staff of AseraCare Hospice for their compassion, guidance, and loving care.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to “Our Neighbor's Place” Overflow Shelter, c/o EUMA, 1033 East 26th St, Erie, PA 16504.
