Obituary for Herbert F. Heidt Jr.

Herbert F. Heidt, Jr., 70, of Erie, passed away peacefully on Monday November 13, 2017 at St. Vincent Health Center surrounded by his children. He was born in Erie on February 8, 1947 a son of the late Herbert F. Heidt, Sr. and Polly Jensen Heidt.

Herb, known as Brud to many, graduated from Cathedral Prep High School and attended Villanova University. He was owner of Gorenflo Co. for over 30 years before retiring in 2012 and turning over the business to his long-time friend and co-worker, John Donovan. He was a member of Bay City Gun Club and the Siebenbuerger Club. He enjoyed shooting and spending time (not hunting) at camp with his friends. He cultivated a love of loud noises and things that explode throughout his life; he was affectionately branded “Uncle Boom Boom” by his niece and nephew. His affinity for loud noises extended to a fondness for drag racing, trains, his Harley Davidson and the Outlaw Country music legends. He enjoyed a rotation of weekly dinner outings with his friends. Although he presented a gruff exterior, those who got to know him found him to be a warm and kind-hearted soul. Herb will be remembered for many things, not the least of which include his loyalty, hard-work, unconventionality, his ability to nap anywhere and a mustache that achieved legendary status. He was a dedicated father and loved spending time with his family and grandchildren, who lovingly referred to him as “Grumps.”

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Virginia Skillen Heidt to whom he was endlessly devoted.

Survivors include his daughter, Sarah Heidt Bagnoni and her husband, Dean, of Winston-Salem, NC; one son, Andrew Heidt and his fiancé, Ashley Leute, of Erie; two grandchildren, Quin and Sawyer; one sister, Holly McGuire and her husband, Mike, of Pittsburgh; two brothers, Fred Heidt of Erie and Marty Heidt and his wife, Sharon, of Seattle, WA; a niece and several nephews; cousins; his long-time coworkers at Gorenflos; and many dear friends. He also leaves behind his canine companion, Tessie (preceded by his previous Brittany Spaniels, Motley and Charlie).

Friends may call at the Russell C. Schmidt & Son Funeral Home Inc., 5000 Wattsburg Rd., on Thursday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. and are invited to a Funeral Mass at St. Peter Cathedral on Friday at 10:30 a.m.. Burial will be private and at the convenience of the family in Gate of Heaven Cemetery.

Memorial contributions can be made to the Bay City Gun Club, 11667 PA-97, Waterford, 16441 or the American Cancer Society, 2115 W. 38th St., Erie, 16508.
