Obituary for Robert D. Gallo Sr.

Robert D. Gallo Sr.
Robert David “Bobby” Gallo, Sr., died peacefully at St. Mary’s Medical Center in West Palm Beach, FL, on Valentine’s Day, February 14, 2017, three weeks after celebrating his 70th birthday. His children and best friends were at his bedside during his final days.
He is survived by his children, Abigail (Gallo) Lechner (Matthew) and Robert D. Gallo, Jr. (Lisa); his grandchildren, Katherine Maeve and Meredith Jane Lechner, and Grayson David Gallo; his sister, Cherie Gallo, of Schenectady, NY; and his nieces, Arin Nebolini, of Rexford, NY and Audra Nebolini of New York, NY. He was preceded in death by his parents, Dominick R. Gallo and Jean Marie Lockwood Gallo.
Robert was born on January 25, 1947 in Schenectady, NY. He grew up in a close community of family and friends and worked in the family business, Dom Gallo Florists, which laid a foundation for his work ethic and love of people. He graduated from Bishop Gibbons High School, and then moved to Erie, PA to attend Gannon University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology and a Master of Science degree in Education. Robert was a passionate Gannon alumnus, and a very proud member of the Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity. His TKE brothers were an integral part of his life, and were with him until the end.
Following graduation, Robert served as a Second Lieutenant in the United States Coast Guard. He eventually enjoyed several dynamic positions, including educator, parole officer and manufacturer’s representative. Ultimately, he found his professional calling as Sales Manager with Erie Molded Plastics, a role he loved until his retirement in 2006; he cherished his Erie Molded family.
Robert remained very active in the Gannon University community; he was Past-President of University’s Advisory Board and a Gannon Golden Knights basketball season ticketholder for decades. During his career, Robert was an active and dedicated member of the Kahkwa Club, the Aviation Club and the Erie Club.
Some of Robert’s greatest lifetime memories include: waterskiing with family and childhood friends at Mariaville Lake, NY; attending the 1980 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid, NY and witnessing "The Miracle on Ice;” enjoying Caribbean island life at his annual timeshare in St. Maarten, N.A.; deep-sea fishing trips with his best friends in the Florida Keys; betting at the horse track in Saratoga, NY; golfing at Pinehurst with good friends; and most recently, traveling throughout Tuscany with his family.
He was a voracious reader and loved thought-provoking conversation about current events, politics and sports nostalgia. He founded the "Abner Doubleday Society," a fantasy baseball league in which hundreds of friends in Erie participated for more than 25 years. He thoroughly enjoyed coaching tee-ball, little league and pony league baseball for almost a decade.
Family and friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial at 12:00 p.m. on Friday, February 24, 2017, at St. Patrick Church, 130 East Fourth Street. Family and friends are invited to a “Celebration of Life” hosted by his children that evening; the details will be shared at Mass. A memorial celebrating Bobby’s life will take place in Jupiter, FL at a later date. Burial will be private and at the convenience of the family.
