Marie E. Gottschling Gehrlein, 99, of Erie, passed away Wednesday, November 02, 2016 at Walnut Creek Healthcare. She was born in Erie on July 21, 1917, the daughter of the late Andrew and Louisa Becker Gottschling.

Marie graduated from Academy High School. She was a lifelong member of St. John’s Lutheran Church. Marie worked as a sales clerk for Fisher Jewelers and the Red Door School Store. She was a lifelong member of the Sunflower Club and Siebenbuerger Club Ladies Auxiliary where she served as treasurer for 25 years. Marie enjoyed volunteering at the Lutheran Home and St. John’s Lutheran Church and would crochet prayer shawls for the church.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Albert H. Gehrlein of 37 years; her son, William Gehrlein; her great-granddaughter, Olivia Grace Schmidt; two sisters, Lillian Heberlein and Irene Melzer; and her brother, Carl A. Gottschling.

Survivors include her son, Carl R. Gehrlein and his wife Margie of Erie; five grandchildren, Stephanie Sperling and her husband, Jay, Jason Gehrlein and his wife Krista, Bethany Colson and her husband Marcus, Keri Schmidt and her husband Darryl, and Justin Gehrlein and his fiancée, Emily Drischler; daughter-in-law, Jacqueline Gehrlein; eight great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

The family would like to thank the staff at Walnut Creek Healthcare for making Marie feel at home with their care and compassion.

Friends may call at the Russell C. Schmidt & Son Funeral Home, Inc. 5000 Wattsburg Rd. Erie, on Friday from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. and are invited to a funeral service there on Saturday morning at 10:00 a.m. Burial will follow at Erie Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to St. John’s Lutheran Church - 2216 Peach St, Erie, PA 16502.
