Earl N. French, 88, of Erie, passed away, peacefully, Tuesday March 1, 2016 at Golden Living Walnut Creek. He was born in Erie on February 15, 1928 a son of the late W. Lawrence and Belva Mason French.
Earl was a 1946 graduate of Academy High School where he was a member of the boys basketball team. He attended Gannon College, where he was a member of the first ROTC class, and went on to proudly serve his country with the United States Navy during World War II and the United States Army during the Korean War. He worked for 23 years at Riley Stoker Corporation, where he also served as union president, before retiring in 1991. He was a member of Holy Rosary Catholic Church.
During the 1960's, Earl was a loyal coach in the Marvintown area of Erie and was a catcher in the City Rec League Fast Pitch Softball. He was an ASA umpire for many years and enjoyed golfing, bowling and crossword puzzles. He was a longtime fan of the Gannon basketball programs.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife, Katherine T. Sementilli French; two brothers, Harold and Orlan French; and three sisters, Ruth Davis, Carol Dilmore and Jessie Smith.
Survivors include one daughter, Michelle Galla and her husband Randy of Erie; two sons, David French of Erie and Christopher French of San Francisco; one brother, Wayne French of Lady Lake, FL; six grandchildren; one great granddaughter; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.
Friends may call at the Russell C. Schmidt & Son Funeral Home Inc., 5000 Wattsburg Rd., on Monday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. and are invited to services there on Tuesday morning at 10:00 a.m.. Burial with full military honors will follow in Mary Queen of Peace Cemetery.
